LaserMax for Quicken -- Version 1.07
BENEFITS & FEATURES
o Saves money: Uses any Hewlett Packard LaserJet+ compatible
printer to print your Quicken checks for a fraction of the
cost of commercially printed checks. (Blank safety paper
costs less than $30 per thousand sheets!)
o Matches your software: Supports 4 popular types of checks
including the Quicken Classic Laser Standard and Quicken
Classic Laser Voucher styles.
o Simplifies using Multiple Bank Accounts: The program can
switch bank accounts "on-the-fly." In other words, using
blank laser check stock and without touching your printer,
you can print checks for all of your bank accounts in
Quicken and then have LaserMax for Quicken automatically
switch accounts during the actual printing. This is also a
safety feature: If you use this your Quicken bank accounts
will always match your LaserMax for Quicken accounts.
o Convenience: If you have multiple bank accounts, you will
no longer need to keep separate preprinted checks for each
one. Nor will you ever need to change the printer check
stock when you change bank accounts.
o Security: Never keep negotiable blank checks lying around.
Use LaserMax to print only as many checks as you need at one
time. There is no need to lock up the blank stock. (It's
only paper.)
WHAT IS LASERMAX FOR QUICKEN?
LaserMax for Quicken prints MICR encoded checks on any ordinary
HP LaserJet+ compatible printer. It works with Quicken 4, 5, or
6 to turn blank check stock into complete checks suitable for
signing. It can print Quicken Classic Laser Standard and Quicken
Classic Laser Voucher checks. It can also print your Quicken
checks on the more impressive UBCC style voucher checks just like
professional accountants. [The UBCC style blank check stocks are
already available from Duplex, and the Quicken style blank check
stocks will be available by February, 1993.]
The software can use the Elfring soft font (included), the
Hewlett-Packard MICR system, or the UBCC font cartridge to MICR
encode the checks. It also can print your company name and
address as well as your bank's information using Courier,
Helvetica, or Times Roman typefaces.

LaserMax for Quicken -- Version 1.07
REQUIREMENTS
LaserMax for Quicken requires Quicken (DOS) 4, 5, or 6 and an HP
LaserJet+ or later model compatible laser printer. (Xerox
printers will NOT work.) Also, if you use the Elfring MICR
option you will need a magnetic toner cartridge, and your laser
printer must have enough memory to hold the soft fonts. (The
original HP LaserJet will not work with soft fonts.) If your
laser has Helvetica or Times Roman fonts you can produce better
looking checks, but those fonts are not required.
INSTALLATION
If you received this software other than on a diskette, copy all
of the files contained in the archive file onto a diskette in
drive A:.
The installation adds only LQ.BAT and the LM subdirectory to your
Quicken directory. So to uninstall you only need to delete
LQ.BAT and the LM directory.
To install:
Step 1: Determine your diskette drive letter. (Usually A:)
Step 2: Determine your Quicken directory. (Commonly this is
C:\QUICKEN).
Step 3: Insert the software disk and enter
A:INSTALL A: C:\QUICKEN
-- -- ----------
replacing the underlined parts with your answers from
steps 1 & 2.
Step 4: CD to your quicken directory.
Step 5: Enter LQ to start up LaserMax for Quicken.
Step 6: Follow the choices offered by LaserMax for Quicken
until you get to the main menu where you can select
Quicken. (Don't worry about making mistakes. You can
always change anything later.)
Step 7: Select Quicken from the menu.
3
LaserMax for Quicken -- Version 1.07
Step 8: In Quicken enter the Preferences menu and change the
Check Printer Settings to match this:
Check Printer Settings

Page-oriented (e.g. laser) printer (Y/N): Y
Supports IBM graphics characters (Y/N): N
--------------------------------------------------------
Even though you are ACTUALLY using a Laser Printer be sure to
tell Quicken that you are using an "<Other Dot-Matrix>" printer.
Except for the "Print to:" option, your answers MUST EXACTLY
MATCH all of the answers shown here!
Step 9: In the Quicken "Print Checks" screen set the "Print
to:" to match the "Chk-<Other Dot-Matrix>" printer. Also set the
"Type of checks to print:" to be "5 Laser Voucher" checks.
(LaserMax for Quicken will make sure that the correct form is
used when it comes time to actually print the checks on the
laser.)
PRINTING CHECKS WITH LASERMAX FOR QUICKEN
When you want to print laser checks run the LaserMax for Quicken
shell (LQ.BAT) instead of Q. Select "Quicken" from the main LQ
menu and find the Quicken "Print Checks" screen. (Make sure the
"Print to:" printer is the "<Other Dot-Matrix>" printer and you
are printing "Laser Voucher" style checks.) Now print the
checks. [At this point nothing should happen at your printer
unless you have turned the "Capture Off" with ALT-CTRL-O.] The
checks do not immediately go to your printer but instead are
saved to be printed from LQ.
To actually get the checks on paper, eXit Quicken to return to
4
LaserMax for Quicken -- Version 1.07
LQ. Choose Print Checks in LQ. LQ will then convert the Quicken
check images into laser checks and send them to the laser. If
the laser checks are OK answer Y to "Delete Check Images?".
Otherwise you can reprint the checks as often as you want. This
allows you to print multiple copies of your checks.
MULTIPLE BANK ACCOUNT SETUP (ADVANCED TOPIC)
You can have the software switch LaserMax for Quicken bank
accounts "on-the-fly." This makes it possible to print checks
for multiple bank accounts in Quicken and then have LaserMax for
Quicken automatically switch accounts during printing. To use:
In Quicken start all of your Account Names with #nnn where nnn is
the LaserMax for Quicken bank number. For example, for the
account "JSR & Associates" you could change the name to "#2 JSR &
Associates". Then whenever LaserMax for Quicken encounters a
check for this account it will print it from bank number 2.
SUPPLIERS
Blank check stock is available from:
Duplex (Mike Ryan) - Niles, IL - 708 692 2260.
Duplex currently has only the UBCC style check stock on
hand, but will soon (by February) have blank check stock for
the Quicken laser checks as well.
Magnetic toner cartridges (required for the Elfring MICR soft
font) are available from:
Advantage Laser - Tuscalosa, AL - 800 239 4027
and at 800 722 2804.
The HP MICR system is available thru HP dealers. It works for
Laser jet II, IID, III, & IIID printers and consists of two
parts:
Toner cartridge P/N 92295M ($169), and
Font cartridge P/N 36596A Opt.612 ($249).
This font cartridge will print MICR characters in the HP4,
but HP does not yet manufacture a MICR toner cartridge for
the HP4. Further HP is currently working on a separate (600
5

dpi) MICR system (font and toner) for the HP4.
The UBCC MICR font cartridge is available from:
UBCC (Andrea Ellis-Garen) - Palatine, IL - 800 762 8222
and at 708 358 9400.
This font cartridge DOES NOT require a magnetic toner
cartridge so it pays for itself very quickly. There is some
debate about printing MICR checks without special MICR
toner. For more information read the contents of the file
UBCCMICR.DOC.
NOTES
The Elfring MICR soft font included with this software is
licensed from Elfring Consulting, Inc. 4N899 West Mary Drive, St.
Charles, IL 60175.
The most important aspect of MICR check printing is the
positioning of the MICR characters along the bottom of your
checks. You can tell if the positioning is correct by putting a
LaserMax check against one of your old checks making sure to
align the BOTTOM (not TOP) and the RIGHT (not LEFT) edges. Then
look at the MICR line to see if they match exactly. (The only
difference should be the check number.) If the check image is
not exactly positioned you can use the General Controls for
Horizontal and Vertical Adjustment to place it precisely.
If you choose the Helvetica typeface but don't get Helvetica
printing of the company name or bank name, make sure that your
printer actually has Helvetica fonts. (Those fonts are not
supplied with this software.)
If you choose the Times Roman typeface but don't get Times Roman
printing of the company name or the bank name, make sure that
your printer actually has Times Roman fonts. (Those fonts are
not supplied with this software.)
Warning: On some printers the Times Roman typefaces can interfere
with the Elfring MICR soft font. If you experience a conflict do
not use them together.
If you are printing checks to the DISKFILE and using the Elfring
soft font you will need to print at least one check directly to
the printer before attempting to print the DISKFILE. Otherwise,
you will not have the MICR font available. (Our licensing
6
LaserMax for Quicken -- Version 1.07
agreement prohibits including the soft font in the DISKFILE.)
For a similar reason you may not use a printer on the AUX port
with the Elfring soft font.

PERMANENT LICENSE
LaserMax for Quicken is distributed under the Shareware marketing
system. The Shareware concept allows you, the user, to use a
program on a trial basis to determine if it meets your needs. If
you find the program useful and wish to continue using it, you
are required to pay a license or registration fee to the author.
If you received LaserMax for Quicken through a distribution
service and paid a small fee, this does not constitute payment
for LaserMax for Quicken. You have simply paid for the
distribution service. The $3.00 or $5.00 or whatever pays for the
diskette, duplication and handling and does NOT constitute
payment for the programs contained on the diskette.
LaserMax for Quicken license and registration costs $46 and
entitles you to USE only one copy of it. That is, you may install
it on your home, office and laptop computers so long as only one
copy is ever in use at a time.
The file INVOICE.DOC contains an invoice which you may print and
use in order to license and register the software. Just fill it
out and mail it with a check. With registration you'll receive
the latest version of LaserMax for Quicken and six months
support. We'll also notify you of any program updates and new
products. Significantly reduced prices on other products are
available to licensees.
The Shareware system is dependent upon honest people. If you use
a Shareware program and have not registered with the author after
the evaluation period, you are helping to destroy the viability
of the Shareware concept. If you appreciate the ability to try
software before you buy it, then we encourage you to register
EVERY Shareware program you use. Registration of Shareware
products ensures the existence of quality, low-cost software.
